IMPROVING (READ: BETTER, FASTER, CHEAPER) SCIENTIFIC R&D
Last week I was fortunate to have spent time with one of the nations leading federal government scientists. Our conversation was about the potential impact of enabling the scientific community to collaborate via social media. The goal would be to allow them to leverage each others research, avoid duplication, improve experimentation, etc. Of course, the intellectual property challenge is very big and real. Many labs will not be quick to share information as they rely on downstream licensing of their IP for future revenues. But, the opportunity for all labs might actually be greater through collaboration. Efficiencies gained may equate to better science and the right science at the right time. R&D heads will then be able to better determine where to focus resources and may still decide to compete in a given market. The outcome could be more intellectual property, sooner and a better ROI for the taxpayer. This industry segment will be interesting to watch as social media proliferates industries.
