BUBBLE 2.0
It feels a bit like 1999 all over again. Maybe a few less extravagant parties and mobile email is passe but the web 2.0 frenzy certainly has a familiar sound, ehrrr, noise. Ten years ago, I jumped into the pool of koolaid with both feet and have many fond memories of the eddy. But I will never forget the post bubble hangover. The pain was real. Families lost homes, businesses experienced serious setbacks, and innovation was put on hold. I am curious how often the lessons learned are being put to practice. Many of the eager entrepreneurs driving todays innovations were not in the working world for the web 1.0 disaster. Therefore, some of the same exuberance is likely without some gentle guidance. Guidance that has nothing to do with technology and everything to do with humility. If there is any contribution the survivors of the previous era can do for the pioneers of today and the companies buying their technologies, it is to encourage a relentless pursuit of value. Knowing the difference between a neat feature and a real product that solves a real problem. Caring about the customers enough to know that sometimes your both wrong. I am excited about the 2.0 revolution and love seeing the innovation engines cranking at full steam. But I believe it is a civic duty to help industry stay focused on value. And that’s what I’m going to do.
